How can I know if this element is a cation or anion by looking at the periodic table?

Most elements on the left side of the PT form postive ions (cations) and most elements on the right form negative ions (anions). Think of the first column of elements, which only have one electron each. They all give away that electron in an ionic bond, making them form cations.
